Hoax or Fact:
Warning: Video in this article is sensitive and disturbing. Viewer discretion advised.
A disturbing video shared heavily online purports to show a man beating cruelly a group of kids at Baharampur Milia International Boarding School in West Bengal state of India. The incident seen in the video is also described to have happened in some other places/schools/hostels in India. The video is real, but the unfortunate incident actually happened elsewhere, in Egypt back in 2014.
Did Not Happen in Baharampur
As you can see in the video, a man beats kids with a stick and even kicks them cruelly without any kind of sympathy. The children can be heard crying out loud and running away, screaming in pain. The unfortunate incident however did not happen at Baharampur Milia International Boarding School or anywhere in India, it actually happened in August 2014 at Dar Mecca Al-Mokarama Orphanage in Giza, Egypt. The man seen in the video is the Mecca Orphanage Manager Osama Mohammed Othman who was beating the children - aged between four and seven - for not asking for permission to watch Television.
The video is also shared online with some other misleading titles like it shows hostel children being punished at Nandi residential international school in Karnataka. The video was actually filmed by Othman's estranged wife, who later posted it on social media in order to expose him. The video went viral in no time and created such an outcry that even the Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi had to respond. The Orphanage manager Osama Mohammed Othman was arrested and charged with assault, forced child labour and violating child laws, before being sentenced to hard labour. The Orphanage's board of directors was also dismissed, and the affected children were transferred to another orphanage.
Therefore the claims that the video shows children beaten badly at Baharampur School or some other place in India are hoaxes.
