TOPIC: urine-powered generator

urine-powered generator 11 months 3 weeks ago #122

I was forwarded an e-mail about a urine-powered generator & I forwarded it to others - but then one of the people I'd forwarded it to told me that it's v.unlikely to be true (& he's a consultant engineer & so I believe him!) - but I'm still slightly unsure, which I suppose is cos I'd like it to be true!
So here are the links to the 2 newspaper articles about it, being one about how it's supposed to work & the other about an interview with the inventors - who are 4 Nigeran teenage girls (& it was pointed out to me that Nigeria is the scam capital of the world! - which, thinking about it, I should've spotted!)

By the way, I couldn't get the Welcome Mat page to work! (I'm not brill at computers!) - so I'm sorry I've not introduced myself there yet! - but the above probably acts as enough intro to me!

Hello TJ,

Thank you for the post.
Yes, the news is fact that the 4 Nigerian girls have developed the urine-powered generator.

The concept is not entirely new or something which is impossible. The core concept is to separate hydrogen from either water or from urine. Separating Hydrogen from urea is bit easier than that of water. The problem in this process is the efficiency. The input energy required to separate hydrogen through electrolysis is more or less equal to the energy that is going to be produced by separated hydrogen.
Four African girls have created a generator that produces electricity for six hours using a single liter of urine as fuel.

This claim needs some verification, and the statement is bit vague, as nothing is mentioned about how many kilo watts of power is being generated, and it is also not clear whether they are counting the required input power to separate hydrogen from Urea or not.

There were similar claims in past from a Pakistani Mechanical Engineer, who says that he has designed a resonance circuit, that takes less input power to separate Hydrogen from water, which makes it possible to run a car using only water as fuel. More details here.

To conclude, we can say that it works if the energy efficiency is good. If we spend 2 Mega Watts of power to generate same 2 Mega Watts of power, there is no point in using the devise.

I'm sorry that you had problem in making post in welcome mat.

Thank you,
Siddhartha.
