6. Sleep Deprivation

Breakfast is an important part of your daily diet. It gives your body the energy to sustain your day. If you skip the breakfast and don’t eat for many hours, your body will fall short of glucose, one of the main sources of energy for your brain. To compensate for this, your liver will start releasing glucose, either from stored glycogen or by producing new glucose from protein molecules. This results in a rise in your blood sugar levels even if you did not eat anything. And if this becomes a habit, your body will fall short of nutrients and can also lead to brain degeneration in the long run.
Overeating is closely associated with increased fat intake, which can lead to obesity and thereby cause hardening of the brain arteries. This can result in a decrease in mental power.
Several studies in the past have consistently shown that Smoking declines the cognitive abilities of brain. It damages the memory, learning and reasoning abilities and can also develop Dementia or the Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar Consumption
Research indicates that high sugar consumption (especially the added sugar) reduces the production of a brain chemical called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). Without this BDNF, our brain can neither form new memories nor learn (or remember) much of anything. So it is important to keep our sugar intake in check.

Your brain needs ten times more oxygen than that is needed by the rest of your body. Each of those billions of brain cells uses this oxygen to function well and control your consciousness. Polluted air that cannot supply enough oxygen (and also supplies other harmful contents) can therefore decrease your brain efficiency.

Sleeping at the end of the day is an important aspect that relaxes and replenishes the health of your body cells, including that of brain. So when you become sleep deprived for a long period of time, it will damage your brain cells and will significantly hamper your brain efficiency.
7. Head Covered while Sleeping
As mentioned above, sleeping is an important aspect, where your body needs good amount of healthy oxygen to relax and replenish your body. Therefore covering your head while sleeping will not only decrease the oxygen supply, but also increases the concentration of carbon dioxide that you breathe out. So one should avoid such habits.
8. Working during Illness
Our brain is a sensitive and vulnerable part of our body. Straining it during illness will add stress to the brain. During illness, there can be an imbalance in the chemical neurotransmitters that coordinate your brain and body activities. Stressing on your brain during illness can slow down or misunderstand your senses and responses, and in the long run can also damage the brain. As they say, healthy body in a healthy mind, the reverse of it is also true here – healthy mind (brain) in a healthy body.
9. Lacking in Stimulating thoughts
Our brain is a thinking organ which learns and develops by interacting with the outside world, through perception and action. So feeding our brain with stimulating thoughts is important, it is similar to what physical exercise does to our body. It protects our brain from cognitive decline.
Note that the human brain has an ability to continually adapt and rewire itself, it can even grow new neurons in old age, so it is important to use it properly. It is also important to note that for your complete healthy being, the mental activity of your brain should also be balanced with appropriate physical activity.
10. Talking Rarely
Talking rarely is equivalent to having minimum communication with the outside world, which is again equivalent to missing out on learning new things. If you talk rarely, you can turn into a introvert who does not share his ideas and feelings with others. This can add up as stress and affect your brain. So it important to speak up and get into intellectual conversations with others, it will improve your brain efficiency.
Meditation, which is a state of not talking to anybody is an exception in this case. It does not cause any damage to the brain, but instead generates peace and energy within our body and mind (i.e. brain).
