Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article, entitled, `Asparagus for cancer' printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me:
"I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project, and we have accumulated a number of favorable case histories. Here are a few examples. Read more
Hoax or Fact:
This message was shared through emails and forums, stating few cases of cancer patients, claiming that Asparagus can cure cancer. However, there are no credible sources to confirm that eating asparagus alone prevents or cures cancer. Asparagus contains vitamin D, folic acid, and glutathione, the antioxidant which do have cancer fighting properties. It is used in many traditional medicines and promotes our body resistance to fight variety of stresses. But the fact is there are many other healthy foods having same nutritional benefits, so claiming that asparagus alone is healthy and can cure cancer does not have any potential reason to it.
The existence of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S, the claimed cancer expert is questionable. His name does not appear in any other credible source except for this article. Moreover, Cancer News Journal, the periodical in which the story was allegedly published, no longer exists and is believed to have changed their service to alternative cancer therapies. But yes, asparagus has certain health benefits for sure. You can read them in the reference section.
For curing cancers, medical experts generally recommend a diet rich in fiber like fruits and vegetables, and also foods low in fats and nitrates to maintain natural resistance to cancer. And it should also be noted that dietary measures are not proper substitute for serious diseases like cancer, one should seek medical diagnosis and proper treatment.
