“Cancer patients shouldn’t die.
The cure for cancer is already found – *its in the way we eat fruits.”
“It is whether you believe it or not.”
“I am sorry for the hundreds of cancer patients who die under the conventional treatments.”
We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It’s not as easy as you think. It’s important to know how and when to eat the fruits.
What is the correct way of eating fruits?
IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS!

The popular story circulating online in various versions since many years through websites and email chains claims that eating certain fruits on empty stomach (or before meals) can cure Cancer. It is also said that consuming fruits on empty stomach will play a major role in detoxifying your (body) system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities, also treating other issues like Greying hair, loss of hair, balding, nervous outbursts and dark circles under the eyes. As a supportive explanation not to eat fruits after meals, it is said that when you eat fruits with other foods, the combination would rot and ferment inside stomach, turning to acid, and the entire mass of food allegedly begins to spoil. No, like detailed below, the claims as such are not facts.
Eating Fruits on Empty Stomach
Origin of Story
The story in question initially shared through emails appeared from an old article on website epicureanworld.com.sg written in 1998 by Devagi Sanmugam, a chef and culinary writer living in Singapore. The article titled “We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits…” mentions fruits should be eaten on empty stomach; without the mention of Dr Stephen Mak, the Cancer cure allegations and the list of fruits-diet suggested for 3 days to cleanse or detoxify your body.
About Dr. Stephen Mak
The story mentions a Dr. Stephen Mak who allegedly treats terminal ill cancer patients by an “un-orthodox” way, suggesting the right way of eating fruits. Our study reveals that in early 2010 Yellowstar Essentials Blog yellowstaressentials.wordpress.com published these allegations in a story that combines the aforementioned article of Devagi Sanmugam. The article is described as an email received from a good friend (Dr. Stephen Mak) at the BSF course. However, we did not find any credible online citations about Dr. Stephen Mak.
About Dr. Herbert Shelton
Dr. Herbert Shelton mentioned in the email is said to have done research on this matter of how and when to eat fruits, calling it the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight. However, Herbert M. Shelton (1895 – 1985) was not a Doctor as such; he was an American naturopath, alternative medicine advocate, author, supporter of rawism and fasting. Notably, he was arrested, jailed and fined on few counts, like for practicing medicine without license.
The story in question is also circulating online with other (false) description titles like “Dr. Oz on Eating Fruit”. The concern is that when fruits are not eaten on empty stomach, they mix with other foods and spoil inside the stomach, also causing health issues. As Authority Nutrition website authoritynutrition.com states, the fibre content in fruits can indeed slow the release of food from your stomach, but it does not make the food stay inside your stomach indefinitely. The body can easily adjust its juices to such changes, to the digestive requirements of the food. Stomach is also designed to prevent the growth of bacteria that cause fermentation and rotting. Moreover, there’s no scientific support that eating fruits on an empty stomach can affect longevity, fatigue, nervous outbursts or dark circles under the eyes.
In general, fruits are healthy, nutritious and weight loss friendly foods that can be eaten throughout the day. Eating fruits on empty stomach (or before meals) can make you feel full, eat less thereafter, reduce calorie-intake and help in weight loss. Therefore, the claims that eating fruits on empty stomach (or before meals) can cure cancer and treat significant health issues mentioned above are hoaxes; the story is perhaps promoted by weight loss gurus.
