Analysis:

The story in circulation since 2004 through chain emails and others states tremendous health benefits of the Bitter Beans Petai and suggests that ‘A Petai a day keeps the doctor away’. The claim as such is a hoax, but Petai consumed in moderation does have some health benefits.

The email listing the variety of health benefits pertaining to stress, strokes and else originated in August 2004, as interesting facts about Petai {mail-archive.com – Interesting Facts about PETAI (PETE)}. A good number of people thought it could be real, also because the message is shown to come from Dr. Aminuddin AHK, a medical faculty in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The fact of the matter is that the email describing various benefits of Petai, originally, was about Bananas. Earlier in Aug. 2004, a website called vitalhealthnews.org published the article with a title ‘A Banana A Day – you’ll NEVER look at a banana in the same way again‘. The webpage had a footnote saying “Reprinted with permission from Seaside Scoop, August 17, 2004.” Looks like, a prankster or someone who wanted to promote Petai copied the entire message about Bananas, edited it a bit, and used a Malaysian professor’s name, Dr. Aminuddin Abdul Hamid Karim, to make it look credible. So the claims of the glorious health benefits of Petai are hoax. However, the bitter beans do have some health benefits.

About Petai

Petai, also called bitter bean, twisted cluster bean, stinker or stink bean (Parkia speciosa) is a plant producing long, flat edible beans with bright green seeds. They have a strong and peculiar smell, similar to natural gas. They contain certain amino acids that give a strong, stinking smell to one’s urine. Petai is widely used in the native cuisines of Southeast Asia. Ongoing research conducted on the Petai plant extracts suggests that it has a potential to be developed as a phytomedicine (plant medicine). Due to their high content of amino acids, high intake of petai beans can harm your kidneys. Moreover, they are vulnerable to worms, so before you decide to cook the petai, make sure you divide the bean into two using a paring knife. Along with its side effects, you can read the health benefits of Petai from the website TheBorneoPost.com. On the other hand, Banana is known to be a very healthy fruit.
