Study Accidentally Exposes Chemotherapy as Fraud - Tumors Grow Faster After Chemo: Facts

Story:

A team of researchers from Washington state had a giant "Oops!" moment recently when it accidentally uncovered the deadly truth about chemotherapy while investigating why prostate cancer cells are so difficult to eradicate using conventional treatment methods. As it turns out, chemotherapy does not actually treat or cure cancer at all, according to the study's findings, but rather fuels the growth and spread of cancer cells, making them much harder to stamp out once chemotherapy has already been initiated.

Hoax or Fact:

Partially fact.

Analysis:

The message in circulation since at least a year talks about a study that supposedly exposed Chemotherapy for Cancer as fraud - that scientists have accidentally found out it fuels the growth and spread of cancer cells, making it tougher to treat. The claim is only partially fact.

Origin of Claim

The claim originated from an article on NaturalNews.com that was published on 24 January 2013 with the same title. The article said that the scientific study published in the journal Nature Medicine has revealed some shocking findings that are being ignored by the mainstream scientific community. Describing the study, the article says that "chemotherapy causes healthy cells to release a protein that actually feeds cancer cells and causes them to thrive and proliferate".

The Study and Actual Findings

On 6 August 2012, the NY Daily News (nydailynews.com) reported about the study with the title 'Shock study: Chemotherapy can backfire, make cancer worse by triggering tumor growth'. The research, funded by National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, included a team who examined cancer cells from prostate, breast and ovarian cancer patients who had been treated with chemotherapy.

The study actually found that healthy cells 'damaged' by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B that boosts cancer cell survival. The protein was seen to be taken up by tumor cells neighboring the damaged cells, which sustained tumor growth and resisted further treatment. The scientists also found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment and were surprised at these "completely unexpected" findings -- while they were seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab. The findings of the study were reported in the journal Nature Medicine (Nature.com), published on 5 August 2012.

Talking about it, the co-author of the study Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle said, "WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumor cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy". "Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells… may directly contribute to enhanced tumor growth kinetics," the team added.

The Missing Information

As reported by BreastCancer.org, the aforementioned is a very early study on breast, ovarian and prostate cancer cells in Petri dishes in the lab. The main purpose of the study was to investigate why prostate cancer cells are so difficult to eradicate using conventional treatment methods. Moreover, the three chemotherapy medicines used in the study – Cisplatin, Blenoxane and Novantrone – are mainly used to treat prostate cancer or ovarian cancer, not generally used to treat breast cancer.

The result from study is actually concerned about the Fibroblast, a type of normal, noncancerous cell that lives in cancer's neighborhood, which when exposed to chemotherapy, sustains DNA damage that drives cancer growth. These fibroblasts, under normal circumstances, play a critical role in wound healing and collagen production and help maintain the structural integrity of connective tissue. From their study, the scientists infer that blocking the treatment response of the fibroblasts could improve the effectiveness of Chemotherapy. In fact, the researchers concluded these results will help find ways to make chemotherapy more effective.

The Article Claim

Not disclosing the actual and complete details of the study, the Natural News article says 'the entire process of chemotherapy is completely worthless, and is actually highly detrimental for cancer patients'. At the end, the writer suggests alternate treatments for cancer, mentioning the Gerson Therapy. More importantly, from its terms, it should also be noted that information published in Natural News website is not professional and accurate:
