A newborn baby abandoned in a forest was saved by a stray dog who carried her across a busy road and through a barbed wire fence to a shed where the infant was discovered nestled with her litter of puppies. Covered by CNN and CBS. Definitely a man's best friend.
Hoax or Fact:
Fact with some missing information.
This story about a Stray Dog to have rescued and saved an abandoned baby in a forest has been circulating online since at least 8 years now. The touching incident is a fact, the complete information of which is however detailed below.
Backdrop of Incident
In early May 2005, in a poor neighborhood near the Ngong Forest in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, two children reported to have heard an infant's cries. When the locals searched, they were surprised to find a newborn girl abandoned in the Kenyan forest who was saved by a stray dog that 'apparently' carried her across a busy road and through a barbed-wire fence to a shed where the dog had nestled her with her litter of puppies.
According to Aggrey Mwalimu, the owner of the shed where the baby was discovered, the newborn girl was clad in a tattered shirt and wrapped in a dirty plastic bag when the dog found her. The 7-pound, 4-ounce infant was taken to a hospital and was doing well later. She was named "Angel" by the hospital workers. Gakuo, the hospital spokeswoman said that the baby had been abandoned about two days before the dog discovered her. "She cried a lot during admission, because her umbilical cord was infected. She is now very quiet. She just feeds and sleeps. I was there this morning and she looked at me and yawned, looked at me again and yawned," she said. Shown in Image Gallery are the new born baby 'Angel' and an 11-year-old student Felix Omondi who pets the dog that rescued the abandoned baby girl. The mixed-breed dog was named as "Mkombozi," or "Savior" by Animal welfare officials and was given its first bath and de-worming.
Newborns Often Abandoned
Newborn babies are often reported abandoned by mothers in Kenyan media, the reasons stated as poverty and the inability to care for the child. However, one good thing that happened in the above case after the publicity on the way the baby was rescued by a dog is it sparked a lot of public interest to adopt the child.
This incident seems to be confused with another similar case in 2008 where a dog sheltered a newborn baby boy who was abandoned by his 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina. Apparently, to rescue him, the dog carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned. You can read about it on CNN Edition.
Incidents like these suggest how certain animals have feelings that humans tend to lack sometimes. Dogs are indeed generous and faithful animals; something we humans must learn. Mentioned in related stories below are some such stories to prove the same.
