Hoax or Fact:

Hoax.

Analysis:

The message in circulation talks about a supposedly rare occurrence when the August month of 2014 will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, a phenomenon that is said to happen only once every 823 years, which the Chinese call ‘Silver Pockets Full'. In various versions, these messages have been circulating since many years now, through emails, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere. Yes, it is a fact that August month of 2014 will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, but the phenomenon is not rare; it happens more often. The claim is a hoax, in fact a myth that has been around for many years. Let us discuss it in detail.

Not Rare Phenomenon

As you can look and test the calendars, the first three weekdays of any month having 31 days repeat 5 times in that month. So any month with 31 days that begins on a Friday will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays. This happens much more often; not every 823 years as claimed. August 2014 certainly has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. The next time the 2014 calendar will repeat itself is in the year 2025, which is only 11 years later. Moreover, a calendar month that has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays will occur almost every year; after August 2014, the same thing will happen in May 2015.

Not After 823 Years

Apart from the fact that the claim in question is not a rare occurrence, the calendar for any year does not even match with the calendar of the year 823 years later. For example, in Image Gallery, you can see the calendar months of August 2014 and August 2837 - they are not same. The message is actually an urban myth that has been around since at least 2010, and interestingly, in other versions as well:

  • This year July has 5 Fridays 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This happens once every 823 years. This is called money bags.
  • This year, July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This happens only once every 823 years.
  • This year October will have 5 Sundays, 5 Mondays and 5 Saturdays. This happens only every 823 years.

Money Bags/Silver Pockets Full

The 'money bags' and the 'silver pockets full' have got nothing much to do with the claims in question. In Chinese Feng Shui, there is a traditional charm, also linked with Chinese Buddhism, known as a money bag. As explained by this Blogger, money bags is basically a little good luck charm bag that Chinese superstition says will bring you money if you hang it around your house or your office. The one, who started the aforementioned myth, asking to be shared, has possibly 'mutated' the word "money bags" and called it "silver pockets full".
