Tashirojima, the Cats Island

Tashirojima, which is officially called as the Cats Island, is a small island in Ishinomaki City of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. As mentioned in the message, the island is inhabited by more cats than people. It has a large stray cat population because of the local belief that feeding cats will bring them wealth and good fortune. The island is inhabited by a small human population of about 100-person fishing community, and as of June 2013, the cat population is 4 times more than the human population on the island.

The story goes that, in the past, the islanders raised silkworms for silk, and so used to keep cats to keep the mouse population down (as mice are natural predators of silkworms). Then in the 1800s, when fishing became popular in Tashirojima Island, the fishermen used to believe that the island’s cats gave them hints about the weather patterns and the day’s catch. So they became fond of these cats and used to allow the stray cats into their inns, thinking that feeding them would guarantee prosperity. The video is a brief clipping showing few cats on the island.

The Cats Island of Tashirojima is like a real-life cat haven, where dogs are reportedly banned from entering, and there are also several monuments in the shape of cats. There is a small and famous cat shrine known as Neko-jinja in the middle of the island. There are at least ten other cat shrines in the Miyagi Prefecture, along with 51 stone monuments in the shape of cats. A movie called ‘Nyanko the Movie‘ was also made by Fuji Terebi, featuring the story of a Droopy-Eared Jack, one of the cats on the island. This movie even developed into further series, each one updating about Jack. As a result of all this, many cat lovers from around the world visit the island, promoting tourism.

Cats, in general, have gained wide attention and love of people around the world these days. They are often used as a means to generate public interest and promote tourism. A cat called Stubbs has been the Mayor of a town in Alaska since 15 years. Another cat called Tama was employed by a Japanese railway company as the Super Station Master.
