A 1500-year old Mummy found in Mongolia wearing 'Adidas' shoes is 'proof of time travel'.
Hoax or Fact:
The story spread wide over internet comes with an interesting claim that a 1500-year old Mummy discovered in Mongolia was wearing 'Adidas' shoes (trainers/sneakers/boots) and that it is a 'proof of time travel'. No, that's not a fact as described below.
The initial news reports about the groundbreaking discovery of the Mongolian Mummy like on The Siberian Times website siberiantimes.com did not mention anything about the mummy wearing Adidas shoes or that it is a proof of time travel. In early April 2016, partial remains (one hand and feet) of a suspected female of Turkic origin were discovered at an altitude of 2,803 metres in the Altai Mountains, Mongolia. In the mummy's grave, alongside the ancient human remains, archaeologists found several other things like a saddle, bridle, clay vase, iron kettle, wooden bowl, trough, the remains of entire horse, and four different 'Dool' (Mongolian clothes). From the initial circumstantial evidence, the researchers estimated the Mummy could be of a woman who lived around the 6th century. A researcher at Khovd Museum, B. Sukhbaatar described the grave a “rare phenomenon” saying, “It is the first complete Turkic burial at least in Mongolia - and probably in all Central Asia…These finds show us the beliefs and rituals of Turkics.” The researchers however did not make any reference to the pair of sneakers, but Sukhbaatar also said the findings in the mummy's grave show us that those people were very skilled craftsmen.
Social Media Speculations
Despite being a groundbreaking discovery, some social media users on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere have been busy wondering whether the footwear of the mummy, with the trademark stripes of the Adidas sportswear brand (refer to second picture in Image Gallery) could be a proof of time travel. Soon came online few YouTube videos - in entertainment category - saying the 1,500-year old mummy was wearing Adidas boots and raising question if it is a proof of time travel. Some news outlets too reported these speculations, all of which made the Adidas shoes and time travel story popular.
The speculations (or the evidence) that the mummy was wearing Adidas shoes/sneakers/boots arose because of the three white stripe lines that kind of resemble the brand’s logo. However, a close look at the shoes in picture shows as if they have more than three white stripes, and they do not even look like a fresh pair of Adidas sneakers like some people suggested. Moreover, as we searched for couple of ancient shoes from the 6th–7th century (also shown in Image Gallery), we could see leather shoes and also good design craftsmanship in those days. The other findings with the ancient mummy also show the use of different types and colours of leather and again good craftsmanship (see fourth and fifth pictures in Image Gallery).
So from all these facts, we can infer two possibilities; that those could indeed be shoes/sandals belonging to the ancient mummy era, or that the Adidas like shoes could have ended up with the body somehow. Therefore, the stories that the 1500-year old mummy found in Mongolia wearing 'Adidas' shoes is a 'proof of time travel' are certainly hoaxes.
