Canada Receives Over 10 Million US Immigrant Applications
Canada Receives about 11.5 Million US Immigrant Applications After Donald Trump was Elected as US President.
Hoax or Fact:
On 9 November 2016 Donald Trump was officially elected as the 45th President of the United States of America. While some considered his win as a great triumph, others were greatly disappointed. Earlier, some celebrities like Bryan Cranston, Amy Schumer, Cher and Barbra Streisand even declared their plans to flee the nation under a Trump presidency. In that scenario, a story circling online stated that Canada received over 10 million US Immigrant applications, and that too when Canada's immigration website reportedly crashed. Although the story became quite popular, the claim that Canada received over 10 million US Immigrant applications is not a fact.
Canada's Immigration Website Crashed
While the U.S. Presidential elections results were out on 9 November 2016, Canada's immigration website cic.gc.ca crashed giving a "500 - Internal server error" message. The officials said the website was "temporarily inaccessible to users as a result of a significant increase in the volume of traffic." In fact according to Simon Rogers, a data editor at Google at the time said that searches for "how can I move to Canada" spiked 350% as Trump swept the U.S. Presidential elections.
On the same day 9 November, an article published on The Global Sun website theglobalsun.com mentioned the crashing of the Canadian Immigration website and went on to suggest that Canadian government received about 11.5 million immigration applications from American residents wishing to move (away from Donald Trump Presidency):
Justin Trudeau made a shocking announcement this morning saying that the Canadian government so far has received about 11.5 million immigration applications from American residents wishing to move into the cold north (we’re sure you can guess why). He then proceeded to say that ‘although Canada as a nation sadly will not be able to accept all applications, we will most likely ease our immigration rules to assist our fellow Americans’.
Trudeau then follows by outlining Canada’s strongest morals, reflecting on the diversity and acceptance for all people, no matter their background. What do you think about this? Should the Canadian government ease up on the immigration rules for their fellow Americans?
The fact of the matter being, as mentioned in their Disclaimer information, The Global Sun is a news satire and parody publication. It has been publishing many hoax stories like Canada & USA to Ban All Clown Costumes on Halloween. So the claim that Canada received over 10 million US Immigrant applications after Donald Trump was elected as U.S. President is a hoax.
