A comprehensive list provided by ‘Business Insider’ cites Sonia Gandhi, President of Indian National Congress as the 4th richest politician in the world. The article titled ‘Meet The 23 Richest Politicians In The World’ has taken reference from World’s Luxury Guide section of Die Welt, a German newspaper, which lists Sonia Gandhi fourth in the list, with assets of $2-19 billion.
“No one goes into politics to get rich, but politicians happen to be some of the wealthiest figures around the globe,” begins the article and proceeds to declare that Sonia Gandhi has assets worth $2-19 billion. “Gandhi is originally from Italy. She is the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, the assassinated former prime minister. As leader of the Congress party, Gandhi played a key role in reviving the party’s fortune and power.”
The article gives a list of the richest politicians in the world, whose names are derived from local officials and US Congress members to royal heirs and foreign ministers. King of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz with an asset of $21 billion finds himself numero uno in the list. The last in the list is US Senator John Kerry, with a networth of $181-$281 million.
Savitri Jindal, another Indian figures at number 7, with networth of $13.2 billion. She is the Member of Legislative Assembly in Haryana. Residing in India, she is one of the richest Indian women and serves as a non-executive board member of OP Jindal, the steel and power conglomerate and family heirloom run by her sons.
Others in the list include Michael Bloomberg, Asif Ali Zardari, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Wu Yajun, Silvio Berlusconi, Vladimir Putin, Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Darrell Issa, Sebastian Pinera etc.

Analysis:
Business insider reports the Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to be the fourth richest politician in the world, declaring her assets to be around $2-19 billion (Rs 10,000-95,000 crore). It is a Fact that Business Insider has published this article. This US based business news and entertainment website analyzes and provides business news aggregated from around the web. Business insider claims ‘World’s Luxury Guide’ as the website source of this particular information about richest politicians of the world, placing Sonia Gandhi on number four. The world luxury guide aggregates its news from five other source namely, OpenSecrets.org, Forbes.com, Bloomberg.com, Wikipedia.org, and Guardian.co.uk.

The financial figures stated are not clear. The wide range of assets $2-19 billion does not really make any sense. If Sonia Gandhi's wealth were to be $2 billion, the lower end of the wealth range as mentioned in the report, she would be in the 16th position on the list, next to Lu Guanqiu, the member of China’s National People’s Council, whose wealth is estimated to be at $2.4 billion.


Our research says that Sonia Gandhi was from a very ordinary Italian family who was married to Rajiv Gandhi and shifted to India. The Gandhi family was worth at least $ 2 billion, and after her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi, the Soviet connection with the Mainos was nurtured by generous financial help through commissions and strong kick-backs on every Indo-Soviet trade deals and defence purchases. According to the respected Swiss magazine, Rajiv Gandhi had about $2 billion in numbered Swiss bank accounts—which Sonia inherited after his assassination. More information here. According to Dr. Subramanian Swamy's allegations, Ms.Sonia Gandhi and her two divorced sisters, Anushka and Nadia, have recently purchased huge properties in Sardinia in Italy from the Aga Khan. Refer here. Her sister Anushka has an Antique shop run by Sonia Gandhi’s family in Orbassano that deals with smuuggled antiques from India. Source. Also, Anushka and Nadia, sisters of Sonia Gandhi are believed to have received at least sixty percent of the kickbacks in the 2G spectrum scam, that could amount to Rs.18,000 crores each. Source. But this is yet to be proved, as the case is still under investigation. Sonia's son Rahul Gandhi has declared his assets to be around 2 crores in the 2009 general elections. Source. Her daughter Priyanka's husband Robert Vadra owns, Artex, a small company that specializes in jewellery and handicraft exports. His companies are believed to have received unsecured loans from the DLF Limited, India's largest real estate conglomerate. Also, India Today weekly has reported that he has a partnership and wide-ranging transactions with DLF Limited.

The video on the right exposes Sonia Gandhi. All these assets and finances of Sonia Gandhi's family could well add up to much more than what it is declared officially.
However, Sonia Gandhi declared her total assets in 2009 general elections to be about Rs 1,37,94,768 (1 Crore+) according to Netapedia, and that her annual income cannot be more than Rs 50-75 lakhs.

Therefore, the exact assets and financial information of Sonia Gandhi are not clear.
