The Popular Story
According to the popular story mentioned in the website ThisMan.org, in Jan. 2006 in New York, a patient of a well-known psychiatrist drew the face of this man who she never saw or met, but repeatedly appears in her dreams and gives her advice on her private life. The portrait left on the psychiatrist’s desk for a few days is recognized by another patient saying the man has often visited him in his dreams too. Upon checking with some of his colleagues, it seems the psychiatrist learns that many patients have seen this man in recurrent dreams. It is said that at least 2000 people in many cities around the world have claimed they have seen this man in their dreams, and no such living man was ever recognized in real.
By sharing the mysterious story, the website says they want to gather the people who have seen this man and understand why he appears in the dreams of thousands of random people. More interestingly, the story became so popular that there came up a bunch of theories to explain “This Man”:- God, an archetype of all our collective helpers, an actual dude who can enter our dreams, or an amalgamation of people we have seen/met.
From the oldest available archive of the thisman.org in Apr. 2003, the website information says it belongs (or belonged) to Galaxie Media Design Services (GalaxieMedia.com), an innovative, multi-disciplinary studio founded in Toronto in 1999. It offers responsive media design and photographic communication arts, also including detailed research and the development of new products and campaigns.
The who is domain information of ThisMan.org shows the website has a private registration in 2008. Then there are couple of reports pointing that thisman.org website is the creation of Andrea Natella, a journalist and sociologist specialized in marketing, who investigates youth culture and media communication and writes for TV programs about magic. Natella is the creative director of Guerriglia Marketing (guerrigliamarketing.it), an advertising agency that uses non-conventional communication techniques, like the creation of fictitious events or campaigns that gain maximum visibility with minimum investment.
The mysterious, creepy story has a clever promotion factor, where the website has a page to download fliers about “This Man” in a wide variety of languages that they show are used around the world. In October 2009, IMDB had an entry of a movie ‘in development’ tentatively titled — This Man. The action, crime and thriller movie was however renamed to ‘The Man from Nowhere‘ and was released in August 2010.
It is possible that the staged hoax story of ‘This Man’ said to be visiting the dreams of random people was meant to market the movie – by playing on people’s minds.
