FIFA World CUP 2014 final match was Fixed.

Hoax or Fact:

Hoax and Scam.

Analysis:

This is a message that went viral online post Germany won the FIFA World Cup 2014 beating Argentina in Extra Time with a score 1-0. According to it, a Twitter account has revealed the result before the match -- suggesting FIFA is corrupt. Let us see if there's any grain of truth in it.

As you can also see in the Image Gallery, a Twitter account named 'FIFA Corruption' (@FifNdhs) has supposedly revealed the outcome of the 2014 Football World Cup final match between Germany and Argentina. The set of tweets published a day before the match say that Germany will win over Argentina with 1-0 when Mario Gotze will score the winning goal in second half of ET (extra time). The Tweets got retweeted several times and many believed it could be true - that FIFA final match might be fixed. Thankfully, that's not the case!

The Truth

The viral story on Twitter is actually based on the clever exploitation of the social networking site. Someone created the Twitter account, called it 'FIFA Corruption' and tweeted a bunch of predictions with all possible outcomes on the day before the final match. After the match result, the wrong prediction tweets are deleted! We also believe the Twitter account was initially set private (locked to public) and made public after deleting the wrong predictions post match result. Then started the retweet sharing of what is cleverly and falsely shown as FIFA corruption. Thanks to the heads up from some of the Twitter followers, there are few screenshots from the Twitter account (one shown in Image Gallery) that show the other predictions that went wrong, to confirm the entire claim is hoax.

Similar Incidents in Past

Interesting enough, this is not the first time such an incident has happened on Twitter. As mentioned by InsideWorldFootball.com, there have been similar cases in past where Twitter accounts claim to reveal the outcomes of high-profile football draws, concluding the in charge of the draws as corrupt. These are in fact scams meant to build twitter audiences. Cheating the system in this way, the Twitter accounts garner thousands of followers who are interested in the game. They can change their name later and the followers forget about this in the future.

So the claim that a Twitter account (@FifNdhs) revealed the Germany vs Argentina result before match in 2014 World Cup final is hoax and a scam. The person was not Paul the Octopus either.
