Fisherman catches Massive Goldfish – Facts Analysis

Story:

A picture shows a man holding a massive goldfish which is claimed to weigh 30 lbs (close to 14 kgs) and is thought to be one of the largest of its kind ever captured.

Analysis:

This picture showing a man holding a giant goldfish created lot of speculations that it could not be a real story and that the picture is simply a photoshop creation. The story is a mixture of hoax and facts, the picture is real, but it is not a Goldfish, an Orange Koi instead.

The Finding

The story of ‘Giant Goldfish’ was in fact reported in 2010 by few news websites as well. However, it wasn’t reported to be a Goldfish as such. Angler Raphael Biagini is the fisherman shown in picture who claims to have landed with this gigantic Koi Carp in a lake in the south of France while he was on a fishing trip. It was supposedly weighing 30 lb and was thought to be the largest of its kind ever caught in the wild.

The Fisherman with Big Fishes

Raphael Biagini is in fact a fisherman who works around catching giant fish like this. In the image above, you can see another similar picture of him shared in Foto Community in 2009:

by Mr Raphael BIAGINI, setting the record for the biggest catch in this place, April 23, 2009. (Translated)

In the video below, you can also watch the fisherman working around and catching some real big fishes. The fish in question belongs to the Carp Species, two most notable ornamental types of which are the Goldfish and Koi. The fish is a Koi Carp that strangely appears like a Goldfish because of its orange color. It is a fact that giant carp fishes like these are being caught since last few years, not just 30 lbs, but even 64 lbs (around 30 Kgs) and much more. The video below of Reel Fishing UK shows a group of friends catching 64 lbs 14 oz mirror carp fish from mirror pool France. And as reported by Anglersmail, the biggest believed Carp is the one caught by an Austrian Roman Hanke in Hungary, which weighed a whooping 101 lb 4 oz (close to 46 kgs). Koi carp fishes are known for their bright colored varieties.

So the picture shown in the story is real – it’s not a 30 lb giant Goldfish though, but is an orange Koi Carp. For your information, the world’s longest goldfish, as recorded by Guinness World Records on 24 March 2003 is a goldfish (Carassius auratus) owned by Joris Gijsbers in Hapert, Netherlands, which measured 47.4 cm (18.7 in) from snout to tail-fin end. You can see a picture of it below. The weight of the goldfish was not provided, and Guinness World Records stopped accepting records based on weight of pets, as the animals can be over-fed.
