Merging Oceans: Where two oceans meet... but do not mix! Incredible and Simply Mind-Blowing!!!

These two bodies of water were merging in the middle of The Gulf of Alaska and there was a foam developing only at their junction. It is a result of the melting glaciers being composed of fresh water and the ocean has a higher percentage of salt causing the two ocean bodies of water to have different densities and therefore makes it more difficult to mix.

Hoax or Fact:



The picture shown in the story is a genuine one, and the message that comes with it is also a fact. The picture shows two different ocean water bodies meeting in the middle of Alaskan Gulf, where a foam is formed at the merging junction. Shown in the video is a glimpse of the Alaskan location where two oceans meet but do not mix.

This happens when glaciers of fresh water start melting and flow to join the ocean water which is more salty. Because of the difference in the salinity and densities of these two meeting ocean water bodies, a surface tension is developed between them that acts like a thin wall and does not allow them to mix. But given enough time, they will eventually mix together.

This picture of two oceans meeting, but not mixing was caught by a photographer on Alaskan Cruise and shared it on Flickr which went viral, spreading on many other social networking platforms. You can find few other similar pictures caught by the same photographer in reference section.

Not entirely true...

This is a phenomenon caused by seasonal upwelling of warmer water, chlorophyll and phytoplankton meeting with downwelling fresher sea water. While some of this can be considered melt off from glaciers, Alaska has a greater amount of melt off from seasonal snow, this has been going on for thousands of years. I believe in global warming but things need to be clarified a bit more than "I think this is caused by melting glaciers," which is what the photographer originally stated, an opinion. Here are a couple of sites to explain the phenomenon. BTW, I sailed into the blue water once off the coast of South East Alaska, the water on the coastal side was 40 degrees, the blue water was 63 degrees, this is as much a temperature and seasonal issue as it is a salinity issue. And remember, upwelling, which carries nutrients and food for the smallest to the biggest sea animals in the ocean, is a result of this process.
