Pineberries: Crossed breed between strawberries and pineapples. Looks like strawberries and taste like pineapples!
The picture messages claim to show and talk about Pineberries, as a crossbreed between Strawberries and Pineapples, which look like strawberries and taste like pineapples. While many people thought the picture could be a hoax creation, it is real and Pineberries do exist, but the claim is partly fact.
Pineberry is a hybrid of two different Strawberry varieties – Fragaria chiloensis, originating in South America, and Fragaria virginiana, originating in North America. Pineberries are smaller than common strawberries and they turn white when fully ripe, with red seeds inside. The fragrant flesh of the fruit can vary from soft white to orange color and as mentioned in the message, the Pineberries have slight Pineapple flavor, but they are NOT a crossbreed between Strawberries and Pineapples. The video below shows Pineberry plants and the fruits grown on them.
How it Originated
Pineberries were publicized in Germany in April 2009, as Ananaserdbeere, or pineapple strawberry, and the hybrid variety plants were developed to be disease resistant. But because of their small size and low-yield crop, they were not very profitable and so were not encouraged much. Commercial pineberries are only available for a period of about five weeks in European countries. According to Strawberryplants.org, pineberry plants can be available in the United States and Canada in early 2014. Refer to their website below for more information about the availability of Pineberries and the plants.
