HOW TO DETECT A 2-WAY MIRROR?
When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., How many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror I.e., they can see you, but you can't see them. There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms or bathroom or bedrooms.
It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of Mirror we are looking at?
CONDUCT THIS SIMPLE TEST:
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. Read more
Hoax or Fact:
The story is a hoax, mostly intended to scare people. The detection mechanism of hidden cameras and two-way mirrors mentioned in the message is not true.
The message claims that mobile calls interfere with fibre optic cameras. But, fibre optic cables do not interfere with other electronics, certainly not the mobile signal transfer, and not all cameras use fibre optic technology. Also, lack of mobile signal, or presence of a mobile signal jammer can result in no mobile calls. So, this part of the story is hoax. Refer the reference section to learn how to detect hidden cameras.
The second part of the story explains how to detect a two-way mirror, by placing tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface. This is also hoax. A one-way mirror is dark on one side, and brightly lit on the other by using a coating of aluminum on one or both sides of the mirror. If the mirror is coated behind the glass, this finger nail test would not work. Moreover, another piece of glass can be used in front part, failing this test again. Also in some cases, mirrors are made using cheap rolls of mirror-like material, that do not have glass in front part of them. This material will again fail this test, and also it cannot be used as a two-way mirror.
A two-way mirror is a specially designed glass which allows the passage of light in both directions, and also reflects light back into the room to show the mirror image. If the lights are off on one side of the mirror and on in the other, the bright side will see a reflection of the image, and the dark side can see through the glass. So, you can detect a two-way mirror by switching off the lights and carefully seeing through the glass. You can also cup your hands around your eyes and watch the mirror closely, to see through the two-way mirror. And note that a two-way mirror sounds hollow when tapped, unlike a genuine one way mirror which sounds dull. Two-way mirrors are not hung on walls, they are generally set into the walls.
To conclude, not all showrooms/trial rooms plant hidden cameras or two-way mirrors to take unfair advantage, at the cost of law. However, it is always advisable to be careful in public places.
