Analysis:
According to a message shared widely on internet space, especially on social media and image sharing websites, the famous Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has been the first Billionaire to fall off the Forbes Billionaire list because of her Charitable giving. As detailed below, the claim is only partially fact.
Actual Facts
J.K. Rowling did not fall off the Forbes billionaire list in 2012 only because of her charitable giving, and she is not the first billionaire to have been dropped off Forbes list for charity reasons. Jon Huntsman Sr. was dropped off The Forbes 400 list in 2010 because of his donations to his cancer foundation.
As mentioned in a March 2012 article on The Telegraph website telegraph.co.uk, Forbes magazine disclosed that J.K. Rowling has dropped out of the world’s exclusive billionaires’ club as a result of her charitable giving and the Britain’s high tax regime levied on high earners, which combinedly left a significant dent in her bank balance. J.K. Rowling has been involved in a number of charities. She does not simply donate her money to various philanthropic causes, but also donates her time and books. “I think you have a moral responsibility when you’ve been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently,” J.K. Rowling is often quoted saying in an old interview.
