Story:

Nba legend Michael Jordan was robbed at gunpoint during an in-store sneaker signing for the Gamma 11’s released earlier today at a Chicago sneaker boutique.

Analysis:

Messages circulating heavily on social media claim that the NBA legend Michael Jordan was robbed at gunpoint during an in-store sneaker signing for the Gamma 11’s. It is said that the robber warned the star at gun point to take off his personal pair of Gamma 11 sneaker shoes and sign his autograph. Some versions of the message also said that the robber killed three people for the shoes. Later, during a police investigation, Jordan seems to have stated that anyone could have robbed him, it could have even been Chief Keef, the rapper from Chicago. They are not facts, the claims are hoax.

These claims about Michael Jordan being robbed at gunpoint for his new brand of sneaker shoes Air Jordan XI ‘Gamma Blue’ originated from an article published in Cream Bmp Daily in December 2013. Post the article was published, links and excerpts referencing this article started spreading through social media, especially via. Twitter and Facebook. The people mistook it for a genuine news article, however, Cream Bmp Daily is an entertainment website that publishes satire and parody, as mentioned in their ‘About‘ page:

CreamBmp.com Written by comedian CREAM. This website is comprised of satire and parody of current news and urban culture. For entertainment purposes only.

Some of the other satire reports in the website include ‘Snoop Dogg Slips Into Coma During “All You Can Smoke” Contest in Colorado‘ and ‘Chris Brown Punches Santa in the Face at Children’s Hospital‘.

As reported in the New York Daily News, Nike brand’s new design shoes, the Jordan’s Gamma Blue 11s were released in December, and the $170 cost of it sparked fights across the United States – from California to the Bronx. So it appears like the satirical article is derived from this incident. Michael Jordan was not robbed at gunpoint for a pair his shoes and autograph, the claims originated from a satirical website.

Satirical news websites have been on the rise lately. So before believing and sharing such ‘news’ items, readers are advised to check for their authenticity first.
