Analysis:
A picture creating abuzz on social media claims to show that Bollywood actor Aamir Khan was posing with two Lashkar-e-Taiba (L-e-T) terrorists Junaid Samshed and Tariq Jameel during his religious trip to Mecca. The story that accompanies the picture also says that his remarks of ‘intolerance in India’ and the same towards a hard working Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) therefore should not be tolerated. His intolerance remarks aside, the claims that Aamir Khan is posing with Lashkar-e-Taiba Terrorists are not facts.
About the Picture and the Other Two Men
The picture and story in question has been doing rounds online since late 2015, the source of which appears to be a Google Plus post on 30 November 2015 that also accompanies the below message:
This man (Aamir Khan) being hand in glove with LET and ISI of Pakistan, questions our tolerance, now we should peacefully show our tolerance so that he should make him self shifted to his beloved country Pakistan. Do not see his movies, do not buy from Snappdeal.
Just few days earlier, between raging debate over alleged acts of intolerance in India, Aamir Khan expressed “insecurity” and “fear” and also mentioned his wife Kiran Rao saying if they should move out of India. His remarks were widely criticized in media and by people in general.
Coming to the other two men seen with Aamir Khan in the picture, they in fact show Junaid Jamshed and Maulana Tariq Jameel, but we did not find any credible evidence that they are active members (or terrorists) of terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba. Additionally, their background information suggests that the man on left, Junaid Jamshed is a Pakistani recording artist, television personality, fashion designer, occasional actor, and singer-songwriter. And the man on right, Maulana Tariq Jameel is a Pakistani religious and Islamic scholar, preacher, and popular public speaker.
Context of Picture
In October 2012, Aamir Khan went to the annual Hajj pilgrimage with his mother Zeenat Hussain. As shown in the first video, Maulana Tariq Jameel says he asked Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, who was a friend of Aamir khan, to arrange a meeting with him at Makkah. Tariq Jameel said that they met Aamir and talked to him about movies and significance of Hajj of the Prophet (see pictures below). He also mentioned that he met Aamir Khan again for the second time at Madina along with Junaid Jamshed – which is what the picture in question shows. Later during a religious preach, Junaid Jamshed revealed few things that happened in their meeting.
So the picture stories saying Bollywood actor Aamir Khan was seen posing with two Lashkar-e-Taiba (L-e-T) terrorists are hoaxes; the other two Pakistani men seen in the picture are known public speakers.
