A video is shared widely on WhatsApp and other social platforms purporting to show BJP MLA Anil Upadhyay Beating a Dalit Boy. Allegedly, the dalit boy purchased a new luxurious car, and unable to digest it, the BJP MLA and his supporters thrashed the boy and his car. Further, the message accompanying the video also questions PM Modi to respond to this kind of inhuman attitude of BJP. What you see in the video is a real incident, but the associated claim is a hoax.
Not BJP MLA Beating Dalit Boy
The video in question shows a group of people thrashing one man with sticks. His car is also hit later on. The ‘disturbing’ incident created a buzz on social media, amidst the ongoing 2019 Lok Sabha elections in India. Contrary to the claim, the truth of the matter is something different. The incident in video appears to be a consequence of dowry harassment. The father in video alleged that his son-in-law beat his daughter so badly she had seven stitches around her eye. He said his son-in-law has been harassing his daughter for dowry. The angry father, accompanied by few men, resorted to thrashing his son-in-law publicly on road. The man can be heard saying sorry, pleading his father-in-law and other men not to beat him, adding he will never repeat it again (his mistake).
The incident took place in March 2017 in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat. The video went viral back then on social media. So, there’s no BJP or Congress MLA Anil Upadhyay involved in the incident, which is not related to any dalit harassment.
