An insensitive video in wide circulation purports to show a Burqa-clad Woman Breaks Hindu Lord Ganesh Idols inside a Mall in Bahrain. Yes, the video is real showing the unwelcome incident from mid-August 2020.

Why the Muslim Woman Breaks Ganesha Idols?

The incident is in fact from a supermarket in Juffair, Bahrain where the Ganesha idols were on display for sale. As you can see in the video, the woman grabs the Ganesha idols and smashes them all onto the floor. She questions the salesman in Arabic why the Hindu idols are on sale in the Muslim majority country before continuing with her outburst. The insensitive actions of the woman in the video became viral on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. She certainly garnered heavy criticism for the mistreatment of Hindu religious idols. The incident took place few days before Ganesh Chaturthi (auspicious Hindu festival) on 22nd August 2020. Here’s an in short news report on the incident in Bahrain.

Bahrain is an Islamic nation with over seventy percent Muslim majority population and about 10 percent Hindus, according to 2010 statistics. After all the controversy from the incident, many viewers demanded punishment for the lady as per local laws. Reports later suggested police tracked down the 54-year-old woman in the video and took her into custody for vandalism and hurting the sentiments of another religious community. On 16th August 2020, Bahrain’s Director-General of Capital Governorate Police also announced the woman was summoned for intentionally damaging a shop in Juffair and breaking religious idols.

On the other hand, some viewers expressed anger saying the incident is a hate crime and misuse of power. They added no religion teaches envy or hatred and to disrespect other’s beliefs.
