Fact Check:
A violent video is in wide circulation online alleging to show a lower class Dalit Girl in Uttar Pradesh tortured for taking Water from upper class well. The two-minute long video shows a group of men beating the girl badly with wooden sticks, slapping and trashing her in public. Although the torture in the video is real, it is not from UP and the said reasons are also not true.

The violent video and claims are viral on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp in early June 2020. Some versions of messages also added hashtags like #DalitLivesMatter and #RSSterrorists. However, the fact of the matter is something different that occurred in Gujarat.
The video actually shows a 16-year-old tribal girl in Bilvant village of Chhota Udepur district in Vadodara, Gujarat. The girl was subjected to draconian punishment on 21st May 2020 for allegedly eloping with a youth from the same village. The men beating the girl in the video are some of her family members and other villagers. You can hear the girl keeps crying helplessly as a result. There were around dozen people present at the spot, but no one came forward to stop the violence.

After the video became viral on social media, Police took action. They registered an offence against 15 people from the incident for rioting, assault, criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, violation of Information Technology Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A separate offence of abduction was also registered against the youth as the tribal girl is a minor.
