These warning messages about poisonous chemical in ‘fruit-head’ dolls originated in UK, suggesting people to report any such sightings to Trading Standards. Tests done on four of the dolls seized from a shop in Gillingham, one of the towns in Medway, were positive for the chemical phthalate. The toxic toys were also seized from a Kent market stall. These brightly-colored toys were previously banned across Europe, but they kept resurfacing at street markets and discount shops, especially during Christmas, as the dolls make quite an attractive gift.

The “fruit-head” dolls that come in the shape of strawberry, apple, tomato or blackcurrant contain the plasticizing phthalate agent, which can cause cancer, infertility in men and deformities in unborn babies. The phthalates are banned in children’s toys and can be dangerous if ingested. Phthalate exposure is known to have serious health effects in children and men’s health. However, women may be at higher risk for potential adverse health effects of phthalates because of their increased cosmetic use, and is thought to develop breast cancer.

Note that this issue of poisonous chemicals in  dolls is not limited to UK. In November 2013, U.S. authorities have seized more than 200,000 toy dolls from China, saying they contain high levels of banned chemical compounds of phthalates.

The Trading standards wanted stockers to remove these poisonous fruit-head dolls from sale and warned shoppers not to buy them. The consumers should be carefully while buying the plastic toys from the less regulated markets on streets and discount outlets.
