Analysis:

A video that went viral online claims to show a girl getting hit with a shovel by another girl, following which the girl reportedly died of head injuries. It is a fact that the video shows a girls’ fight that ended with shovel on one of their heads, but the reports saying the injured girl died are hoax.

About the Video & Incident

On 6th of May 2014, the six second girl fight video uploaded to Vine.co went viral online. As you can see in the YouTube version of the video shown in this article, Miranda Lynn Fugate, a 16-years old student from Springfield, Ohio, gets hit by another girl in the head with a shovel — after trying to retrieve a “BB gun”. But the short clip did not tell the whole story, which is even more dumber. The full version eight-minute video was later uploaded to LiveLeak, YouTube (which was later taken down for content) and elsewhere, where it garnered millions of views within couple of days. The video shows a group of people hanging around, when the pair of girls agree to fight – trading punches, slaps, kicks and insults, later followed by the shovel attack.

Did Miranda Fugate Die?

A day after the video went viral; an article on Huzlers.com reported that Miranda Fugate died of serious head injuries following the shovel attack from an old friend of hers named Emily Powers.

At first, It only seemed like a minor head injury as Miranda also temporarily lost one ear’s hearing. Suddenly, while watching ‘Mean Girls’ at home that same day, Miranda collapsed and died instantly. Doctors are saying she died of severe head trauma.

The article also requested users to tweet with hash tag “#RIPMiranda” and show their condolences, which made the story trending on Twitter. The truth of the matter is, Huzlers is a satirical website, as mentioned in the ‘About Us’ information at the bottom of the website:

Miranda Fugate aka ‘Shovel Girl’ did not die. Following her death reports, she added another Vine saying she is doing fine. She also clarified the same on her Twitter account.

Criminal Investigation

After the incident got wide attention, a representative for Miami County Sheriff’s office in Ohio told TMZ.com on 7 May that they are currently conducting an investigation on Emily Powers. Major Steve Lord told TMZ that Emily Powers could be charged with assault or disorderly conduct.
