‘Secular’ Kerala reinvented Indian National Anthem “Nabi Gana Mana”

Fact Check:

A video is circulating heavily online with critical claims saying it shows Islamists in Kerala Distorted Indian National Anthem. Some other versions said ‘Secular’ Kerala Reinvented Indian National Anthem into “Nabi Gana Mana”. The video shows a group of school students and others appearing to hoist Indian national flag and singing some other Islamic song in the tune of Jana Gana Mana. Although both the video and audio are real, the claims as such are not true and explained here.

Have Islamists in Kerala Distorted the Indian National Anthem?

The first sight of the video gives an (false) impression that the Muslim gathering in a school is hoisting Indian national flag and singing Islamic ‘Nabi ye’ song instead of national anthem Jana gana mana. Likewise, many viewers criticized the act and some also called for action against them for insulting Indian national flag and anthem and for making it religious. The fact of the matter is – they were neither hoisting Indian national flag nor insulting the anthem.

Not Hoisting Indian National Flag

What you see in the video is not any Independence Day or Republic Day celebrations hoisting Indian national flag. They were in fact celebrating Eid Milad-Un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid and Eid-e-Milad. The day, believed to be his birthday, is dedicated to the teachings of Islamic Prophet Mohammad. Muslims sing Naats or verses praising the Prophet, they hoist and carry various Islamic green flags going on procession. So, what you see in the video is a Milad-Un-Nabi flag similar to the one in below video showing a rally in Kerala. Note, the flag hoisted (not entirely visible in video) has a red section of color on top – not the orange color of Indian national flag.

As far as the song is concerned, it sounds like a Malayalam dialect, where ‘Nabi ye’ refers to The Prophet. Most probably, they were singing his praise and about making life beautiful (loose translation). They in fact made the Islamic song in the tune of Indian national anthem. Many viewers said it is a Muslim school (perhaps Madrasa) in Kerala. Some viewers from Kerala also said they have seen such proceedings there. However, some viewers criticized converting Indian national anthem to a religious song.

Islamification in Kerala

The video from Kerala garnered much criticism alleging Islamification of Indian national anthem because of some prevailing conditions. There have been concerns about mass conversions of Kerala people into Islam, also involving conversion mafia according to some reports. For instance, Kerala’s Popular Front of India (PFI) is linked with mass proselytizing, illegal financing and about its ultimate goal to turn India into a theocratic Islamic state.
