Facts Analysis:
A disturbing video in heavy circulation online purports to show a man beating cruelly a group of kids at Baharampur Milia International Boarding School in West Bengal State of India. The video also appears with other descriptions and places in India. Although the video is real, the unfortunate incident happened elsewhere in Egypt back in 2014.
Did Not Happen in Baharampur
As you can see in the video, a man beats kids with a stick and even kicks them with cruelty without any kind of sympathy. The children cry out loud and run away, screaming in pain. The unfortunate incident however did not happen at Baharampur Milia International Boarding School or anywhere in India. It in fact happened at Dar Mecca Al-Mokarama Orphanage in Giza, Egypt back in August 2014 . The man in the video is Mecca Orphanage Manager Osama Mohammed Othman beating children – aged between four and seven – for not asking permission to watch Television.
Othman’s estranged wife filmed the video and posted it later on social media in order to expose him. The viral video created an outcry in no time. Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi also condemned the incident. Police arrested the Orphanage manager Osama Mohammed Othman with charges of assault, forced child labour. He was put to hard labour. The incident resulted in dismissal of the Orphanage’s board of directors and transfer of affected children to another orphanage.
Appears with Different Stories
The video also appears online with some other misleading titles like it shows punishment of hostel children at Nandi residential international school, Karnataka. Similarly in 2019, another version said the incident took place in DPS Rajbagh, Valsad.
So, the claims about the video showing children beaten badly at Baharampur School or some other Indian place are hoaxes.
