Analysis:

Various messages, also along with some pictures, claim to show and warn people in Indian Maharashtra that there are many Lady Gangs armed with Chloroform secretly to Kidnap Kids. Not to worry, these warnings are not facts!

How It Started

For few weeks in early 2015, the city of Mumbai in Indian state of Maharashtra and its outskirts (especially between Vasai and Virar) have been abuzz with rumors that gangs of women are using chloroform to kidnap small children. Slight variations of these warnings were also doing rounds on WhatsApp, saying that a gang of nearly 1,500 women were involved in such crime. Subsequently, these messages were even accompanied by photographs of an old woman in saree (shown in this article), who is said to be hiding the chloroform bottles inside her saree in a smart way. These picture messages that went viral on Facebook, also shared by a Mumbai Facebook page Aamchi Mumbai, said that the woman was caught by police in Vasai region when she was trying to kidnap children. Furthermore, there also came up picture messages showing a woman in a car trying to kidnap a child in Walkeshwar and another woman trying to snatch a kid from an auto rickshaw in Khar (both in Mumbai).

Facts about the Pictures

According to a Hindi news report of GalliNews.com on 19 Feb 2015, the pictures of the old woman in question actually show her selling local liquor secretly (not chloroform bottles) in Kurha, Amravati, Maharashtra, on a Dry Day. She was arrested by Chandur Railway Police of Amravati.

Kidnap Warnings Not True

These child kidnap messages that spread wide on social media created panic among parents in the Mumbai city, following which, the Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria himself denied the existence of any such lady gangs. He asked people not to believe in such rumors and not to spread them. Cops even sent out bulk messages to reassure safety to citizens. DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni also said the same and added that they have increased patrolling in schools and are keeping a tight vigil. For any information on this, he suggested people to dial 100 (police control room).
