He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby’s cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby’s cries outside their doors when they’re home alone at night. Please pass this on! and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby. This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America’s Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

Various messages doing rounds on social media sites warn residents in Telangana State of India not to open their doors at night saying a robber group belonging to Bidar and Gulbarga regions are luring people with recorded cries of babies and attacking and kidnapping them once they open their home doors, also to steal their organs later. The message is claimed to be coming as a warning from Town Police Nirmal, or District Superintendent of Police from Jagityala and Adilabad. The stories in English and Telugu languages also carry some pictures of robbers at night allegedly showing same. But no, the claims are not facts.

The main claim is that robbers, kidnappers or killers are using recordings of a crying baby to coax unsuspecting women/men into inviting them into their home. It is said that the criminals then intend to attack people with weapons, kidnap them and later steal their organs. However, there are no credible reports of any such incident to have happened in Telangana. The above picture appearing like a Telugu language newspaper print warning of the case is simply a copy of editing; not newsprint. The story in fact originates from an old rumour.

Origin of Story: Night Robbers Using Baby Crying Sounds?

The original story dates back to email versions back from January 2003 that warned people in Baton Rouge (Louisiana, United States) of serial killers using recordings of a crying baby to coax unsuspecting women. At that time a serial killer was operating in the Baton Rouge area, but the Police Department clarified on their website brgov.com that such method of entry using tape recording has not been determined. Those warnings appeared like one of those scare rumours that surface amidst fear. In later years, however, we have seen such warning messages reproduce in several variants in other U.S. cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and also other countries like Australia, including India as of this writing.
