3. Pakistani Police torturing Christians

Fact Check:

The disturbing video in question is shared heavily online in various languages. It purports to show Pakistani Police attacking Hindu family simply for hoisting a Saffron flag on their roof. The video shows Policemen holding axe and batons and breaking into a home, beating people while women are around. Also, it is shown they were taking away a young man. Outside again, couple of other people were also beaten up. While some versions of the story claim that it was the Pakistani Policemen torturing Christians, the communal claims are just not true.

About the Video ‘Pakistani Police Attack Hindu Family’

The people you see in the video are in fact Punjab Police in Pakistan. But contrary to the communal claims, the alleged ‘Hindu/Christian’ people seen inside the home are wearing Muslim attire, speaking a language that sounds like a mix of Hindi and local language. Importantly, just beside the entrance of the home, instead of any saffron flag, you can observe a ‘black flag’ hoisted near the compound wall.

Faisalabad Power Riots in 2013

Yes, the video does not show any communal violence of Pakistani Police, it shows an aftermath of Faisalabad Power Riots back in 2013. Large number of people were protesting the prolonged electricity load shedding, some of whom, vented their anger by attacking a grid station and offices of the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO). They also blocked traffic on a road, pelted police and vehicles with stones, causing injuries to four constables. The Pakistani Punjab Police then chased the protesters, broke into some houses and thrashed anyone they found there. What you see in the video is part of that scenario. Reportedly, the Policemen also abused and dragged women when they objected their conduct.

The unfortunate incident in Pakistan’s Faisalabad happened in June 2013. However, according to reports, at least five of the policemen were later suspended. In year 2015, the video was also shared online with titles like “This is Punjab Police, Watch Their Open Ghunda Gardi with People in Faisalabad“. So, the claim that a Hindu family in Pakistan had a saffron flag on their home, and Police attacked them just for that reason is a hoax. Spreading and sharing such false stories will do no good but hamper the communal harmony among people and society in general.
