After watching this video from one of my FB friends page, I really don’t know what to say.
I’d like to know who this girl was. I’d throw her A$$ in the river.

Analysis:

A disturbing video claiming to show an act of animal cruelty has been circulating since three years. It shows a young girl throwing few puppies into a rapidly flowing river one by one. The video is real, and the act of animal cruelty gathered lot of criticism back then. The video was shared on YouTube in late 2010 and was soon removed for animal abuse following worldwide criticism from animal lovers. You can watch it on The Telegraph news website telegraph.co.uk.

The Incident

A young Bosnian girl is seen in the video picking up puppies from a dirty bucket one by one and throwing them into a rapidly moving river. The video is real, it is not faked, one can even hear the splashes as the puppies hit the water. Many internet users and animal rights groups called for the identification of the young girl in the video and punish her severely for performing an act of sick and unspeakable abuse with the innocent puppies.

Police Response

Police in Bosnia later said that they have located the girl from Bugojno, a central Bosnian town, but the name of the girl, who is a juvenile, has not been released. Reportedly, the authorities even let the matter go, because the girl is too young to face a judge. It was also said that none of the puppies thrown into the water had died, and were in fact rescued by an old woman who allegedly found them along the shore.

Animal Rights Groups’ Response

Velimir Ivanisevic, head of Sarajevo animal group SOS, said he was told the original video was filmed by the Bosnian girl’s brother. He also said the incident is a mirror of society and pointed how young people are being raised. Nadja Kutscher, a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) spokeswoman called it outrageous and also mentioned the puppies would never have survived — that the puppies with the old woman were completely different from those thrown into the river.

As reported by CNET news, after few days, a video of apology purporting to be from the girl in the video appeared on YouTube. With a still frame from the video, the apology reads:

“My name is Katja Puschnik and I would like to appologize [sic] for my behavior. The puppies belong to my grandma and she told me to get rid off them because they were only 3 days and they were ill. They had parasites from their mother. I didn’t knew [sic] exactly what to do so I thrown [sic] them in the river because it was a short death. I did not want to make them suffer. I am really sorry for this 🙁”

However, the video was quickly removed from YouTube and lack of additional information makes it difficult to say whether the video and the apology from the girl were real or not. Under Bosnian law, a person who kills or tortures animals can be fined from $19 to $6,400.

Animal rights groups around the world have condemned the girl’s horrific actions against the innocent puppies, and several online groups have since been created, including many on Facebook.
