Some messages doing rounds on messaging platforms claim to present a TikTok Pro service to access the banned TikTok app in India. They accompany a link through which the user can allegedly download the service and access TikTok thereafter. Do not get carried away, the messages are hoaxes and part of scam possibly spreading spyware and malware.

Ban on TikTok, China-based Apps

On 29th June 2020, Government of India banned 59 China-based apps, including popular apps like TikTok, SHAREit, CamScanner, WeChat, UC Browser and Shein. The ban came up over data and privacy concerns in the wake of the face-off with Chinese forces on the India-China border in Ladakh. The violent clash on 15th June left 20 Indian soldiers dead and many injured. TikTok is a very popular short-video creating and sharing app with millions of active users in India. For your information, making TikTok videos in the beginning also led to some deaths in India and other places. The messages in question started spreading soon after the ban, luring unsuspecting users the access to the popular short-video making app.

Fake TikTok Pro Apps

Various messages appeared in different languages along with URLs to download the TikTok Pro service and access the banned app in India. They claimed to offer videos and allow users to create content similar to TikTok. However, unlike the claim, there’s no official TikTok Pro app service. Do not click through the links; they are part of online scam. In most cases, the link coming with the message downloads APK file to install the malicious app in the name of giving access to TikTok. It can contain spyware or malware that can steal your data and/or damage your Smartphone, installing rogue apps.

So, do not click through such links and avoid downloading possible malware or spyware. Also, do not forward the scam messages to others. Note, Android users are most vulnerable to such scams, especially if third-party app installation is enabled. And remember, the fake TIkTok Pro apps and scam can appear in other names also.
