Fact Check:

A picture message in wide circulation on social media alleges to show Dr V. K. Srinivas, Vice President of Bharat Biotech taking first dose of clinical trials of Corona vaccine. It mentions how confident the team is in their product and congratulates them. Although the company has started human trials of Coronavirus vaccine they are working on, the claims in question are not true.

Context of Message, COVAXIN

COVAXIN is India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine Bharat Biotech is developing in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV). The vaccine received DCGI approval for Phase I & II Human Clinical Trials, commencing across India from July 2020.

The picture message is doing rounds on social media sites like Twitter and WhatsApp among others. One version of the message also appears to show a letter from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to Bharat Biotech to speed up the process of human trials. The letter is in fact a real one from 2nd July 2020 – ICMR inviting Bharat Biotech to fast-track the clinical trials of their COVID-19 vaccine. The letter mentions vision to launch the vaccine for public health by 15th of August. So, it asks the medical institutions and principal investigators to ensure the subject enrollment for human trials is initiated no later than July 7th.

Not Bharat Biotech Vice President Taking First Dose of Clinical Trials of Coronavirus Vaccine

If a Vice President of Bharat Biotech took the first dose of clinical trials of Coronavirus vaccine, it would have easily grabbed media attention. Although the nurse apron has Bharat Biotech logo on it, there are no credible reports to authenticate the claim. V.K. Srinivas is in fact a Vice President (Quality Assurance) of Bharat Biotech International Ltd. However, the person in the picture does not appear like him.

Moreover, vaccines are not usually administered intravenously like in the picture. A vaccine administration may be oral, by injection (intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous), by puncture, transdermal or intranasal. Considering the tightened band on the person’s arm, the picture probably just shows the nurse drawing blood. Executive Editor of NDTV, Uma Sudhir also responded on Twitter clarifying the Company (Bharat Biotech) told her it was a fake (message) tweet.
