A health message doing rounds on WhatsApp, Facebook and other online platforms claims Caripill Papaya Leaf Extract Tablet Cures Dengue in 48 Hours. The message also says the medicine is available totally free, asking readers to forward and spread the health awareness to everyone. The claims are mixture of hoax and facts explained here.

Caripill is a formulation of Tablets & Syrup containing Papaya (Carica papaya) leaf extract. The medicine took form because Papaya leaf extract has the benefits of possibly curing dengue.
Bangalore based pharmaceutical company Micro Labs Limited launched Caripill as a prescription medicine in 2015. Caripill is also approved by AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) authority. To explain its effect, Caripill increases the platelet count in patients suffering from Dengue. In severe cases of Dengue, the patients in fact suffer low levels of blood platelets. Note, the Company says Caripill can also treat patients with other life-threatening disorders requiring restoration of blood platelets. Although there is no specific treatment for dengue disease, National Health Portal of India mentions Papaya among some commonly available medicinal plants used to – prevent its complications. The mode of action is to strengthen the immune system so that disease gets controlled within few days:

Although there is no specific treatment for disease, Ayurveda stresses to strengthen immune system of the body and keeping a control on hyperthermia.
Amrita (Guduchi) Tulasi (Holi basil) Shunthi (Dried ginger) Papaya are the commonly available medicinal plants and used to prevent its complications by potentiating immune system so that disease gets controlled within a period of 4to 8 days.
Managing Director of Micro Labs Ltd., Dilip Surana said Caripill comes at an affordable cost to help in treating moderate to severe dengue cases. However, part of the story saying Caripill is a miracle that will definitely cure Dengue in 48 hours is misleading. The manufacturers in fact suggest Dengue patients taking Caripill for 5 days – under medical supervision. Contrary to the claim, Caripill is also not available for free.
