About Bay Leaves for Diabetes Cure

Bay Leaves refer to the aromatic leaves of several plants used in cooking. They appear in slightly different varieties, also based on region they grow. Fresh or dried bay leaves are useful in cooking because of their distinctive flavour and fragrance. Few limited, small scale studies in fact suggest that Bay Leaves can be helpful in lowering Type 2 Diabetes.

Limited, Small Studies

A 2009 study published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition studied the effects of bay leaves on blood sugar and investigated the same on humans with Type 2 diabetes. Participants who received 1 g to 3 g of ground bay leaves (Laurus nobilis) every day for 30 days experienced a drop in their blood glucose (ranging from 21 to 26%), cholesterol and triglycerides. The study suggested consumption of bay leaves decreases risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It also said they may be beneficial for people with Type 2 Diabetes.

Another 2011 small study published in Research Journal of Medicinal Plants comprising of sixty five people with type 2 diabetes showed reduced plasma glucose (with significant decreases up to 30%), cholesterol and triglycerides. In 2015 a Faculty of Medicine from University of Lampung suggested Indonesian Bay Leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp) as Anti-diabetic for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, saying they have active compounds like Eugenol, Tannins and Flavonoids.

A 2015 published study conducted on Diabetic rats investigated the Anti-hyperglycemic Effect (lowering glucose levels in the blood) of the methanol extract of Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Leaf, along with its possible mechanisms of action. The study concluded Syzygium polyanthum methanol leaf extract exerts its anti-hyperglycemic effect possibly by inhibiting glucose absorption from the intestine and promoting glucose uptake by the muscles. The study also suggested the effect may be attributed to the presence of Flavonoids, Glycosides and Squalene in the methanol leaf extract from Indonesian Bay Leaf.
