The story from Ghana that went viral online comes with a shocking claim that the deadly Ebola Virus is not real, it doesn’t exist, and that the current Disease is actually spreading through treatments and injections from the Red Cross. We will analyze in detail if there’s any grain of truth in these claims.

Origin of Claim

On 8 October 2014, a nurse in Ghana named Nana Jovaun Kwame posted a Facebook note titled “Ebo-LIE,” in which he described the fear surrounding the Ebola outbreak in his country, and also listed some reasons to say that Ebola as a Virus does not exist and is not spreading — that the current outbreak is due to conspiracy of Red Cross and America against West African countries. The complete story was soon taken by some news outlets and various conspiracy sites, and was also published in GlobalResearch.ca website.

The Ghana nurse Nana Kwame stated that the Red Cross has brought the Ebola disease to four specific countries, for four specific reasons, and that it is only contracted by those who receive treatments and injections from the Red Cross. As for the main reason, he says, the vaccine from Red Cross has implemented the sickness being “called” Ebola with an ultimate goal of getting American troops on the grounds of Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone — to get a control on their businesses like Diamond supplies in Sierra Leone and Oil in Nigeria.

Flaws In Theory

It would be fair to say that America has been exploiting countries in West Africa for their abundant natural resources, but the Ebola Virus Disease is not something invented now, it first emerged back in 1976 and has been researched & documented by many countries. Outbreak of Ebola happened in other countries as well like Congo in 1995 and in Uganda in 2000. So saying Ebola is not a real virus is outright hoax!

In the first reason that Nana Kwame mentions to support his claims, he says:

“…America was just trying to get into Nigeria for “Boko Haram” #BULLSHIT but that fell apart when Nigerians started telling the truth. There ARE NO GIRLS MISSING. Global support fell through the floor, and a new reason was needed to get troops into Nigeria and steal the new oil reserves they have discovered.”

The Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping referenced as Boko Haram kidnappings happened on the night of 14–15 April 2014, when around 276 female students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State of Nigeria, more than 200 of whom remain missing as of this writing. The Ebola outbreak in 2014 started in December 2013, before the Boko Haram kidnappings, so the above claim that America (and Red Cross) planned Ebola as a conspiracy to get their troops inside Nigeria after Boko Haram incident does not stand valid. Moreover, the responsibility for the kidnappings was claimed by Boko Haram, a militant Islamist organization based in northeast Nigeria.

It should be noted that there have been a small number of patients affected with the Ebola Virus in the United States as well. The severely affected countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia do not have good health systems and lack human and infrastructural resources. Also note that Nana Kwame himself denied the common “depopulation” claims and suggested business reasons for the alleged Ebola conspiracy.

Red Cross Efforts

Contrary to the claims, the American Red Cross along with its global partners has been supporting the Ebola relief efforts. To combat Ebola in Sierra Leone, the Red Cross is using text messaging to educate people and take down Ebola. A related organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has thousands of volunteers in West Africa focused on Ebola. There are no proofs to say Red Cross is injecting people with the Ebola Virus.

Conspiracy Theory

It is understandable that the Ebola Virus has claimed thousands of lives in West Africa, and since there’s no known vaccine for the disease, all treatments are considered “experimental” currently – which is what causing fear among the general public. However, the Ebola Virus Disease, which is dubbed by some as “the new AIDS”, is claiming many lives every day and creating serious concerns worldwide. So conspiracy theories like this (also see Related Stories section below) can do more damage than good and create unwanted fear and chaos among general public. It can also hinder the relief work carried out by Ebola aid workers. In September 2014, a Red Cross team was attacked by people, while burying dead Ebola victims in southeastern Guinea.
