Feng Fu Ice Cube Method: Old Chinese Acupuncture Technique

The traditional Chinese acupuncture technique prescribes placing an ice cube between the two tendons on the back of the neck – in the hole where the neck and the head connect. This pressure point that usually comes at the level with the tip of the ears (see Image below) is called Feng Fu, which translates as “wind mansion” or “a shelter from the wind”. Chinese medicine describes Feng Fu as a pressure point that returns the entire body back to its natural physiological balance, so accordingly, external factors that influence your health and bodily processes may be neutralized by treating this point. It is said that your body will start to rejuvenate when you place an ice cube on the Feng Fu point and many health ailments will disappear, the result of which – you will feel more energetic and healthier.

According to David Wolfe website and PositiveMed website, the Feng Fu point is associated with headaches, colds, low energy, toothache, earaches, and joint pain amongst other ailments. Placing pressure ice on the point regulates the fiery, energetic nature of Feng Fu to stimulate the flow of energy through the meridian pathway (‘energy highway’ in the human body) and starts the healing process. Notably, this Feng Fu pressure point is often manipulated for relief of headache, neck aches and stiff necks.

Our Test

I tested the Ice cube healing method on Feng Fu point on two occasions, once at night for 5 minutes (discontinued due to cold weather and discomfort lying on stomach), and next day morning on empty stomach for about 16 minutes. In the first experience at night, I could feel a ‘squeezing effect’ in my body centred at the point of ice, and after discontinuing the method after 5 minutes, I did in fact feel slightly refreshing. The experience in the morning was cold and uncomfortable to start with, but after sometime, I could feel balance and better breathing. After the ice melted completely, as I woke up, I felt refreshing and peaceful, also energetic and plain happier.

Science Behind

Scientists say placing ice on the Feng Fu point can be beneficial to health because the pressure point is very close to our brain stem. Moreover, the lying on stomach posture is one type of Makarasana (a Yogic asana), where the compression of the belly helps in getting rid of harmful stress hormones from the body. The Makarasana, which is used to calm your body and mind after doing other asanas, focuses the mind and centres erratic energy, thereby reducing anxiety, regulating blood pressure and promoting sleep. Regular practice of the asana is also known to get rid of fatigue, constipation, flatulence, indigestion and back pain, also improving posture.

So considering all the aforementioned aspects, the Ice cube Feng Fu healing method can certainly improve sleep quality, mood, heal the digestive system, and relieve colds, headaches, toothaches and pain in general. The other claimed health benefits viz. in Respiratory and Cardiovascular diseases, Thyroid issues, PMS Menstrual cycle, and improvement of Mental health can possibly be facts that may occur over a period of time practicing the method. However, note that you should not do this technique if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, and suffer from schizophrenia or epilepsy. If you have any other condition, it is better to take advice of your doctor before following the method.
