Dr. Diane Harper was NOT the lead researcher in the development of HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix. She was in fact the principal investigator of the clinical trials of those vaccines against HPV. Her statements in question were addressed at a major anti-vaccine conference held by the anti-vaccine group National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) that took place in Reston, Virginia in Oct. 2009.

In her addressal, Dr. Diane Harper did raise some concerns about both the HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix, recommending that patients should be more informed about the risks associated with them, and advocated personal choice and an individualized approach to HPV vaccination. She expressed concerns as to how long protection from HPV vaccines such as Gardasil will last, and the extent of adverse effects the vaccines can cause in some people.

The HPV vaccines, which were introduced in 2006, haven’t been long enough to make such claims; the long term efficacy is monitored by Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a joint program operated by United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As for the deaths reported, a study that probed into them found no common pattern suggesting that they were caused by the vaccine. About the serious adverse effects, Dr. Diane Harper talked about a study that reported them in 3.4/100,000 doses of vaccines distributed, which is relatively low. She in fact clarified this in an interview later. Apart from these concerns, as reported, Diane Harper never said that the HPV vaccines do not work, were not tested, or are dangerous.
