Story:
Message purporting to be from the Institute of Health Sciences in Baltimore claims that lemon is a “miraculous food” which can kill and cure cancer cells effectively, and is 10,000 times stronger than the common cancer treatment of chemotherapy. The message also says that Lemon therapy is a proven remedy for all types of cancers.
Fact Check:
Scientific studies have proved that citrus fruits including lemon contain compounds
that can be useful to prevent or combat certain types of cancers. The message mentioned above is however an exaggeration of the potential of Lemon, as a cancer preventing and killing agent. The message in fact was not even published by the Institute of Health Sciences as mentioned.
“The email did not come from the Health Sciences Institute. Whoever started this scam email did use some of our published material – which had nothing to do with lemons in any way – and inserted the information about lemons.”
“It is erroneous and has caused us a great deal of trouble. However, most troubling is that it is giving false or un-tested medical advice to people suffering with cancer,” the Institute pointed out.”
Therefore, at this point of time, it is not clear how effective citrus lemon will be in preventing, killing or fighting cancer in humans. So, it would be inaccurate to claim that lemon is a “proven remedy or cure for cancers of all types.” Also, at this point, it cannot be said that lemon is a reliable alternative to traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy, and definitely not 10,000 times stronger than it.
