Ines Ramirez Perez with her Child
About Mexican Woman and Her Self Caesarean
On 5th March 2000, in Rio Talea, a rural area of southern Mexico, a 40-year-old pregnant woman named Ines Ramirez Perez, who was already mother of six, was alone in her one-room cabin when her labour pains started. There was no one around to help her, and the nearest hospital was miles away in the city. So, she decided to operate on herself, because she could not deliver the baby naturally and the baby movements inside started to stop. Having lost her previous baby to labour complications like this, Ramirez was desperate not to lose another child.
After 12 hours of constant labour pain, during midnight hours, she sat down on a low wooden bench, took several gulps from a bottle of rubbing alcohol, grabbed a 15 cm knife that she used for butchering animals and sliced her abdomen in the right paramedial region, cutting the uterus longitudinally. She pulled out her baby boy from her uterus, who then breathed immediately and cried. Ramirez carried out this C section operation on herself for about an hour, and at some point of time, either before fainting or after regaining her consciousness, she wrapped a sweater around her abdomen area and sent her son, Benito out for help.
Aftermath of the Incident
Hours later, couple of health workers came to her rescue. They sewed up the seven inch incision using a regular needle and cotton thread. Then they took her to a hospital in the city. The doctors were shocked to see Ines Ramirez Perez conscious and fine, with no signs of shock when she arrived at the hospital, considering what she has done to herself and the blood loss and pain.
The doctors declared even though the incision was considerably higher than what a doctor would do, she did not do any serious damage to herself, but for minor incision effects and an adhesion that caused the descending colon to be twisted, which was later released upon division. Both the mother and child Orlando miraculously survived the event. Ramirez recovered well and returned from the hospital. International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics reported this rare case of self Cesarean.
Later Ramírez described her experience saying:
“I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. If my baby was going to die, then I decided I would have to die, too. But if he was going to grow up, I was going to see him grow up, and I was going to be with my child. I thought that God would save both our lives.”
