Story:

Please do not show sympathy to people selling cotton ear buds on roadside or at Signals…… Just wanted to warn you people not to buy those packs of ear buds you get at the roadside. It ‘ s made from recycled cotton that has already been used in hospitals. They take all the dirty, blood and pus filled cotton, wash it, bleach it and use it to make ear buds. So, unless you want to become the first person in the world to get Herpes Zoster Oticus (a viral infection of the inner, middle, and external ear) of the ear and that too from a cotton bud, DON ‘ T BUY THEM!
Please forward to all this may be helpful for someone………….

Analysis:

These messages are widely spread through emails and social media, claiming that the road side sold cotton ear buds are recycled ones and are infected ones, and that they should not be used as it can lead to skin ear and skin infections. The story however is a hoax. Doctors did check for the quality of such cotton buds, and they do not believe that they are recycled ones. The doctors further add that even if they are recycled by washing and bleaching, it would automatically kill any micro organisms or dirt present in it.

The second confirmation comes from the manufacturing industry of cotton. They say that the process of recycling used cotton, by cleaning, washing and bleaching would cost far more than buying fresh new cotton. Fresh cotton is a relatively cheap commodity and the cost of its processing is far less than that of ear buds made from recycled cotton. Moreover, Herpes Zoster Oticus is not a viral infection of the ear, as mentioned in the message, it is in fact a skin rash disease. Read the reference section for further details about this disease.

Therefore, the aforementioned story claiming road side cotton ear buds are recycled and infected is just a hoax. Of course, everybody knows that the cotton buds we find on roadside can be of slightly poorer quality, but there is nothing dangerous about them.
