Few messages circulating online claim that the famous Oreo Cookies are made of Pork, i.e. they contain pig fat. Pig fat is generally called Lard. Indeed Oreo Cookies did contain Lard, but that was in the past, They do not contain lard anymore.

The Oreo Cookie

The Oreo cookie was introduced back in 1912 by Nabisco, and over the years it became one of the best selling cookies. Originally, these were animal cookies, and were made with lard, i.e. pig fat in both its rendered and unrendered forms. Oreo’s recipe used lard to create the delicious creme filling. In fact many sweets and cookies were made with animal fat during those times.

But in the mid-1990s, health concerns prompted the company to replace the lard in the Oreos filling with Trans fat (unsaturated fat). This was because of the worries that lard in the cookie can cause heart problems. However, later research showed that the Trans fat was even worse for heart than lard. As a result of this, starting in January 2006, the Trans fat in the Oreos was replaced with non-hydrogenated vegetable oils.

So presently, the Oreo Cookies do not contain pig fat. Oreos are appealing to children as well as adults. A 2013 study of students in Connecticut College claimed that Oreo Cookies are as addictive as Cocaine.
