Analysis:
These messages have been spreading through emails and social networking websites, claiming that most of the consumer products of multinational firms, including Lays Chips in Pakistan contain Pig Fats (Code: E631) and is Haram for Muslims, who have to avoid them. It is not a fact.
Lays Chips in Pakistan is not haram. It does contain an ingredient coded E631, but it refers to Sodium inosinate, which is generally produced from meat and also partly from fish, but this purely depends on the origin of the product. In Pakistan, inosinate is NOT made from any animal products, but is made from tapioca starch that is extracted from a plant named cassava. Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR), a government body has also verified that Lays contains vegetable fats only and is free from all animal meat fat. Not just Pakistan, this Lays is also sold in other Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Malaysia and UAE. SANHA, South African National Halaal Authority, an internationally recognized organization has also verified that Lays in Pakistan is Halal.
The message also mentions several other E-Codes of ingredients claiming that they contain pig fats. However, the very first code E100 refers to Turmeric (curcumin), a herb that can not contain pig fat in any way. Even a Pakistani website says E100, Curcumin as Halal. The origin of all these messages relates to Dr Amjad Khan from Medical Research Institute, United States, the authenticity of whom is unclear. The rest of his message also does not have any back up evidence to support it.
To conclude, these messages about pig fats in various products are highly dramatized, but lack facts. Lays in Pakistan does not contain Pig Fat, and for any other consumer product, the best way to know if it contains the same is to check the ingredient list properly before buying.
Hoax or Fact:
Hoax.
