Analysis:

The messages suggest Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract as a safe and effective supplement for weight loss, which prevents and reduces the fat within the body. Although there are few ‘limited’ studies that show weight loss benefits, the safety and efficiency of green coffee bean extract can not be established at this point of time.

About Green Coffee Bean Extract

Coffee beans are actually the ‘green seeds’ that you will find inside a bright red berry. Roasting these green seeds will turn them brown and create the characteristic aroma and flavor of coffee that many people crave for. The unroasted green coffee beans are soaked and then concentrated to create the green coffee bean extract.

When the coffee beans are roasted, it reduces the amount of a constituent chemical called chlorogenic acid. That is, the green coffee beans extract has higher levels of chlorogenic acid, which is ‘thought’ to be beneficial for heart disease, diabetes, weight loss, high blood pressure and others.

How Green Coffee Bean Extract became Popular

The Green coffee bean extract became popular for weight loss after it was featured on the Dr. Oz show on 26 April, 2012. The program of Dr. Mehmet Oz referred to it as “The green coffee bean that burns fat fast” and called the supplement as a ‘magical pill’.

On the show, Dr. Oz revealed the results of his own study that involved studying 100 women for weight loss, some of whom were given 400 mg green coffee bean supplement while others received a placebo. After two weeks, it was said that the women who had taken the green coffee bean extract lost two pounds on an average, while the others on placebo lost only one pound.

Dr. Oz also referred to a study conducted in 2012 with 16 adult people who were overweight and obese, where in, a set of people were given capsules of coffee extract (1,050-mg and 700-mg) and others received placebo for 22 weeks. The average weight loss observed was slightly over 8 kg, which was more than 10% of the body weight.

It was said that the green coffee beans extract contains high concentrations of chlorogenic acids that are known to have health benefits and influence the glucose and fat metabolism to promote efficient weight loss.

About the Studies

The available research studies on green coffee bean extract for using in weight loss are preliminary, limited and not of quality standards that can conclude something.

On the Dr. Oz show, the weight loss supplement was called as a ‘miracle pill’ that burns fat fast, also claiming that no exercise or diet is needed. However, at the end of the article, it was mentioned that no pill is more effective than maintaining a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet. An article on Forbes points Dr. Oz for wrongly promoting few other products, including this magical weight loss pill of green coffee bean extract.

He hypes green coffee beans, another supposed weight loss aid, saying, “You may think that magic is make-believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they have found a magic weight-loss cure for every body type!” Specter (Journalist writer at The New Yorker) finds that claim is not accurate, and is based on a study of just 16 adults conducted by the company that makes the stuff, and which has used his comments as a marketing gimmick.

The study referred by Dr’ Oz was in fact limited and comprised of only 16 members, a small number, and it was also funded by a green coffee bean extract manufacturer.

Note that an independent analysis of 3 randomized clinical trials involving 142 people concluded that the effect of green coffee beans extract is only moderate at best, and that the previous studies were poorly conducted.

Safety Concerns of Coffee Beans Extract

Since coffee beans extract are concentrated that contain high doses of caffeine, it can have several side effects on health, like headaches, allergy, nervousness, anxiety, GI upset, insomnia, ringing in the ears, and irregular heart beat. It was also observed that using caffeine-based weight-loss supplements and then stopping them led to withdrawal symptoms like headache, fatigue, depression, concentration problems, nervousness and a flushed face.

Note that high caffeine intake can even trigger the loss of calcium and magnesium from the body, and then there is a long list of medications that interact with caffeine, from diabetes to blood pressure drugs. Even in the Dr. Oz show, the green coffee bean supplement was NOT advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women, which also included children – as its effects on children are not established.

Conclusion

As of now, the limited research, possible side effects and interactions with other food supplements and medications outweigh the pros of green coffee beans extract for using in weight loss.

It should be noted that supplement products in general are not regulated the same way as drugs when it comes to safety testing. Instead of spending good amount of money on supplements like these, it is advisable to look for safe and natural weight-loss strategies, like joining a fun fitness class and buying more fresh fruits and vegetables.
