Analysis:
These messages have been circulating in several versions and are older than 1996. The jist of all these messages is that a student, tourist, or a traveling businessman who gets involved with a local stranger at night has ended up awakening in a bathtub full of ice. Then he/she is informed with a note that his/her kidneys have been stolen for organ transplant and should seek immediate medical attention to avoid death. Following this, the emergency personnel arrive on the scene, offer the first-aid, take the victim to a hospital where he/she is described as being on a transplant waiting list, and then eventually declared dead later. Although this warning of kidney theft sounds scary and possibly true, such incidents were not reported anywhere. These scary warnings are simply hoax messages that have been circulating since years.

Facts about Warning Messages
In January 1997, the New Orleans Police Department received numerous inquiries about these warnings of kidney theft of travelers, after they were drugged with alcohol to the point of unconsciousness. After an investigation into these allegations, the New Orleans Police Department declared these warnings as Internet hoaxes, without any basis. On their website, they also issued a public statement in this regard.
Stealing Kidneys
Stealing kidneys from a living human being is not an easy process, it needs highly trained medical professionals to remove, store, transport and then transplant them successfully. All this process needs a medical environment, sterile setting, and precise surgical process – it cannot be by accomplished by ordinary people on streets/hotels as mentioned in the messages. Having said that, kidney theft is definitely possible in a medical/hospital environment, where the ‘medical thieves’ get into such organ thefts for money gains. This happens without the knowledge of the patient. In fact a global crime report of BBC says that kidney theft has been happening in many parts of the world, and is a growing concern.
To conclude, the messages about kidney theft of student, tourist, or a traveling businessman by a stranger is a hoax. However, as a safety precaution, it is always important to be careful while involving with strangers.
