Certain stories doing rounds on social media sites and elsewhere online come with a ‘breaking news’ announcement that a Vaccine that will Cure Diabetes has been officially announced and the entire world is celebrating! Unfortunately, the claims about the vaccine for Diabetes cure are not facts.

Back on 25 November 2015, at a press conference in Mexico City, Live Your Diabetes Foundation and the Association for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases announced a vaccine that would halt and even reverse Diabetes. Salvador Chacón Ramírez, the foundation president and Lucila Zárate Ortega, the association president credited Dr. Jorge González Ramírez with developing the treatment for Diabetes called Autohemotherapy. According to them, the Diabetes treatment involves taking blood from the patient, mixing it with saline solution and refrigerating it, before injecting the mixture to the patient, which gradually halts and even reverses diabetes. They also claimed the vaccine lasts 60 days and the treatment is for about one year. Notably, they did not claim to have created a cure for diabetes, but a treatment that had produced improvement in all the cases where it had been tried.

Proponents Office Shut Down

After the press announcement and publicity, on 27 Nov. 2015, Mexico’s Cofepris, the Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risk shut down the office of one of the promoters of the Diabetes treatment. The promoters’ websites were also disabled. Cofepris director Mikel Arriola said that no such Diabetes vaccine has been authorized and that the public was being deceived. He also added the Live Your Diabetes Foundation was not a foundation at all, and criminal charges would follow.

In late 2016, some click bait websites in fact reproduced the old story as official announcement of a vaccine for Diabetes. It is certainly a hoax. As of this writing, there is no known vaccine to cure the Diabetes condition.
