Fact Check:
A picture message is doing rounds on social media alleging to show Excavation in Ayodhya Found the Shivalinga Lord Shri Ram used to Worship. It is a fact some ancient remains of Hindu idols and a Shivalinga appeared during temple construction work at Ayodhya. However, the picture in question is an old one not from the incident.
Excavation of Hindu Idols, Shivalinga in Ayodhya
On 9th November 2019, the Supreme Court of India gave a historic judgment directing the Central Government to hand over the disputed site at Ayodhya for the construction of a temple and set up a trust for the same. The court also directed the government to give a suitable land measuring five acres to the Sunni Waqf Board for building mosque. Likewise, Ram Mandir construction work started slowly on 11th May 2020 because of COVID-19 pandemic. After 10 days, many objects came to surface during land leveling work at the site of Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya.
The excavation unearthed ancient remains of Hindu idols, pillars, carvings on sandstone and a Shivalinga about 5 feet long and 12 inches width.
Shivalinga discovered at Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya
General Secretary of Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra Trust at Ayodhya, Champat Rai disclosed the same, adding the Shivalinga is similar to the one at Kuber Teela. Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra posted about the findings on their Twitter page. The signs of ancient temple again validate the presence of Hindu temple beneath the site where the Babri Masjid was erected. However, it is not known if Lord Ram used to worship the Shivalinga or not.
Shivalinga Picture Not Related
The picture in question is in fact an old one from late July 2016 in Farrukhabad City of Uttar Pradesh, India. It was taken during renovation of old Matiya Devi temple, which also had place for Matiya Shankar (Lord Shiva) where the Shivalinga was installed around 250 years earlier. During renovation, the people were surprised to see the large part of the Shivalinga coming out from inside. At the time also, rumors spread saying the (already existing) Shivalinga was found during an excavation.
