Analysis:
A story appearing online since many years claims that the common Telephone greeting word ‘Hello’ actually comes from the girlfriend name Margaret Hello of Alexander Graham Bell who invented the Telephone. It is said that Graham Bell used her name ‘Hello’ as a telephone greeting out of Love, so that she will be remembered. No, the claims are not facts.
Firstly, the woman beside Graham Bell in the pictures that come with the current claims is actually Mabel Gardiner Hubbard, the wife of Graham Bell, who took the married name Mabel Bell. Then there are no official proofs that Graham Bell had a girlfriend named Margaret Hello. Bell actually married Mabel, his “deaf mute” student, after developing affection for her.
According to a related article on wired.com, Graham Bell’s famous first words spoken over telephone are — “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you,” it was delivered without any greeting at all. Later when Bell weighed in on the subject, he proposed using “ahoy, ahoy,” which was in fact the first telephone greeting used — until Thomas Edison suggested ‘Hello’ in 1877. There are some claims that Edison coined the word Hello, but that is not the case, because the word Hello itself turns up in a number of places before 1877.
So the stories claiming the famous telephone greeting Hello comes from the girlfriend name Margaret Hello of Graham Bell, the inventor of telephone, are most certainly hoaxes.
